Lead Platform Engineer

We are seeking a Lead Platform Engineer for Data to join the Data Services and Engineering team at ODI, a team filled with bright and empathetic data people. ODI works across all departments in the state, with data that touches all Californians. You will find that the problems and challenges we engage with require the heart as much as the mind.

Location: This position provides telework opportunities in accordance with agency telework policies. ODI is currently operating in a hybrid work environment with staff reporting to the office 2 days a week to either Sacramento HQ or our Oakland Hub.

Annual salary: $128,808 – $156,576 based on experience and qualifications

What you’ll do

  • Be responsible for establishing the blueprint of ODI’s modern data stack.
  • Bring a user orientation to your work.
  • Complement the Data Services and Engineering team skillsets with your depth of experience in architecting data platforms in the cloud, developing infrastructure as code, and setting up effective CI/CD workflows for analytics.
  • Help identify and vet tools that meet the architectural blueprint.
  • Adopt a platform mindset avoiding bespoke solutions in favor of cloud-first, sustainable, and scalable solutions that address common needs across many projects and clients.

  • Technical/Knowledge Skills
    • Experience translating business needs into technical implementations, including mapping out business processes and data models
    • Experience architecting cloud data platforms to support analytics
    • Experience estimating and projecting costs of cloud data platforms
    • Experience in data manipulation and analytical thinking
    • Experience implementing CI/CD for analytics workflows
    • Experience with infrastructure as code (Terraform, CloudFormation, or similar)
    • Experience implementing a modern cloud data warehouse (e.g. Snowflake, Redshift, BigQuery, etc)
    • Experience implementing data orchestrators (ie Airflow) and loaders (e.g. Fivetran, Stitch, Hevo, etc)
  • Personal Skills
    • Enjoys collaborative processes and developing shared understanding
    • Ability to communicate with technical and non-technical audiences
    • Investigative ability and intellectual curiosity
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills
    • Ability to learn and embrace new technologies

  • Bonus qualifications
    • Experience moving data from legacy on-premises sources to cloud based
    • Familiarity with Microsoft’s Azure Cloud Tools and/or PowerBI
    • Experience writing and maintaining ETL/ELT code
    • Experience training non-technical users to use technology to support their work 
    • Programming proficiency in SQL 
    • Experience with dbt or comparable technology
    • Experience with Python, Scala, or other data-oriented programming language 
    • Experience working with a variety of databases, APIs, and file formats to extract and transform data
