Principal Analytics Engineer

We are seeking a Principal Analytics Engineer to join the Data Services and Engineering team at ODI, a team filled with bright and empathetic data people. ODI works across all departments in the state, with data that touches all Californians. You will find that the problems and challenges we engage with require the heart as much as the mind.

Location: The employee’s workstation is located in Oakland, CA or Sacramento, CA. ODI is currently operating in a hybrid work environment with staff reporting to the office 2 days a week to either Sacramento HQ or our Oakland Hub. Travel to the Sacramento headquarters will be required. This position provides telework opportunities in accordance with agency telework policies.

Annual salary: $148,320 to $166,860 based on experience and qualifications

What you’ll do

  • Serve as the lead expert on building efficient, flexible, and actionable data models for a variety of analytic purposes.
  • Coach other department staff on how to develop data models using the dbt framework so they can do the work well beyond working with ODI.
  • Lead the development and documentation of modern analytic engineering patterns for the State of California based on what we learn in client projects.
  • Work with cloud-based tools and using SQL-driven coding practices with dbt to create data models.
  • Always prioritize empathy and ethics in your work.

Through hands-on client projects, you will work with department staff to enable and empower them with good analytics engineering practices on a modern data stack. You will help incubate and scale these best practices by serving as a consultant, coach, and advisor for departments upgrading to a modern data stack. You’ll work with the broader ODI team to identify and guide the development of training and materials to help support departments in adopting best practices.
