Research participant rights

The California Office of Data Innovation (ODI) invites you to participate in a study.

You choose how much you want to participate and what information you share.

  • We never connect your personal details to your specific comments
  • We only share the minimum level of information necessary with approved state departments and partners who follow strict privacy rules
  • Anonymous data (that can’t be traced back to you) stays in our analysis

Under the California Public Records Act (Government Code §6250), we want to be transparent with you about what we collect, how we use it, and your rights when you participate in any conversation with ODI.

What we collect

  • We only gather basic information needed for specific projects (like your opinions or session recordings)
  • We keep this information for up to 2 years, and only for as long as we need for our analysis

How we use your information

  • We combine your responses with others’ to spot trends
  • We remove personal details before analyzing data
  • We never ask for personal info like your name, phone number, or exact address unless necessary for business purposes (like your zip code to compare experiences in your area)

Your rights

  • Skip questions or withdraw from the study anytime without impacting your current or future access to state services
  • Ask to see what information we have about you
  • Request corrections to inaccurate information
  • Delete your personal data (we’ll respond within 15 days unless required by law to keep it)

Following your participation, you can email privacy@innovation.ca.gov to:

  • Get a copy of your data
  • Fix errors in your information
  • Delete your personal details
